Research Notes:
c780-820: Mamikonid prince [Ref: Brook ByzantineAnc p20]
From Vita Basilii, Konstantinos VII, 956/9, Maiktes, race of Arsacides, in
charge of a mission, or for another affair, arrived at Constantinople. A
happy chance took him to meet a man of the same race named Leon. This one
gave him finally one of his daughters. Of them born the father of Basil [Ref:
Settipani LGA p179]
Basil's grandfather, Maiactes, of noble Armenian descent (allegedly Arsacid -
see above), married the daughter of an Armenian resident in Constantinople
called Leo, in the reign of Constantine VI (780-797). As a child, Basil was
captured with his parents in the sack of Adrianople by the Bulgar khan Krum
(813). His parents died in captivity, but some 8-10 years after their death
Basil was released and made his way to Constantinople, where he eventually
came to the attention of the imperial family, and finally of the emperor
Michael III (842-867).
Adontz' proposal is that the Armenian Leo whose daughter married Maiactes is
the later Leo V, the Armenian. [Ref: Chris Bennett SGM 12/18/1995]
it seems impossible to trace the paternal line of Basil beyond the
grandfather. This name nevertheless is frequently employed in V to VIII
century in the noble armenien family of Mamikonian, fallen in 775. Family
origins point to the town of Til, squarely in the mamikonian possession. In
addition, the Manouegh bishop that plays a very important role at the time of
the deportation carries also a Mamikonian name [Ref: Settipani LGA p184]
of Mamikonid descent; dotted line on chart to Artavazd, who migrated to
Georgia in 771 and was Satrategus of the Anatolians in 778; dotted line to
Hmayeak, the Patrician Myaces fl. 703-712; dotted line of seven or eight
generations to Hamazaspian, son of Hamazasp I Prince of the Mamikonids 387-432
& Sakhanoysh, the Gregorid heiress [Ref: Wagner PedigreeProgress #43]
It is possible that Basil may be of direct Mamikonian descent since his
grandfather Maiactes (or great-grandfather) bears a characteristic Mamikonian
name (Hmayek). Unfortunately, there is no other indication of Maiactes'
immediate origins. [Ref: Chris Bennett SGM 12/18/1995]
