noted as 1st Earl Marischal in AR7 #256 and SP VI p39, but CP vol XIV identifies son as first Earl Marischal [Ref: CP VII p98 (with corr in XIV p405), SP VI p39, Weis AR7 #256]

1 Aug 1442: an agreement (confirmed to his son 30 Oct 1444) assigns a wife Mary, then dead, to Sir William, lord of Keith. SP VI p40 quotes Regesta Avenion for a commission (26 Apr 1414) to grand dispensatoin for the marriage of "William de Ketht" of the diocese of St Andrews with Marjorie, daughter of Alexander Fraser of the diocese of Moray. The age of his son and heir makes it unlikely that (if Sir William married this Marjorie) she was the mother of his children, while the depositions set out by Innes show almost conclusively that Mariota, Lady de Keith in 1436, was the mother of Robert the son. Mariota is not a form of Marjorie, but a diminutive of Mary. It is probably, therefore, that Mary (who was dead in or before 1442 was also Mariota) was the mother of Sir William's children [Ref: CP VIII p475(a)]
