Research Notes:
Lord of Long Lawford Newbold-in-Avon and Cosford, Warwick [Ref: ES XIII #103,
Farrer EYC v9p23]
of Long Lawford, Warwickshire [Ref: Rosie Bevan SGM 7/31/2002-221605]
occurs in an entry in the Thorney Liber Vitae [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p723]
in his notification of a gift to Pipewell abbey of land in Long Lawford, co
Warwick, John referred to Robert de Stuteville as his lord and brother; his
gift was confirmed by William son of Robert de Stuteville referring to John as
his uncle, and later by Joan Wake in her widowhood and by Baldwin Wake, her
son and heir, Joan being great-granddaughter an dultimate heir of Robert de
Stuteville III [Ref: Farrer EYC v9p23]
Long Lawford and Newbold were held at the Domesday survey by Geoffrey de
Wirce, and were afterwards given to Nigel d'Aubigny, form whom they were
inherited by Roger de Mowbray. There is evidence that Robert de Stuteville
enfeoffed John his younger brother of land in Long Lawford, and it can be
deduced that these lands in Warwickshire held by the Stutevilles and their
descendants of the honour of Mowbray formed part of the 10 knights' fees
granted to Robert de Stuteville III by Roger de Mowbray, as an initial
settlement of the disputes between them [Ref: Farrer EYC v9p23]
1139-47: probably witnessed a Leicestershire charter of Ranulf earl of Chester
[Ref: Farrer EYC v9p26]
1148-55: probably witnessed a charter of Simon earl of Northampton to the
church of Lincoln [Ref: Farrer EYC v9p26]
1166: held 10 knights' fees in Warwickshire from Roger de Mowbray,
representing the first stage in a settlement of the dispute between Roger and
Robert de Stuteville concerning fees forfeited by Robert II de Stuteville
