date and place of his birth are confirmed by two jurors at the Inquisition post mortem ofr John Sutton IV. One juror, Philip Egerton of Egerton in the partish of Malpas, co Chester, stated that John, son of John de Sutton, was aged 1 1/2 years at the Feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in 1362; this probably lodged in his mind because the Inquisition of a predecessor, Philip de Egerton, occurred in the same year. Another juror, Robert de Belew, said that he well knew that John was born at Coleshill on the Feast of St Nicholas next after "the middle plague", which was in the 34th year of Edward III (1360), at which time "Edward the late King and Edward Prince of Wales, his eldest son, returned with their army from France." This evacuation followed upon the Treaty of Bretigny, signed on 8 May 1360, when on 18 May King Edward embarked at Honfleur with four of his sons. From this it would appear that John IV had been born in1360, but the official end of the war, with cereminial for the King of France, extended towards the end of 1361, and the King, with three of his sons, left for England, reaching London on 9 November 1361. This return must have been a memorable occasion for this juror which fixed the date in his mind. That the date was indeed properly establshed at the Inquisition as 1361 is shown by the fact that he had reached full age by 13 May 1383, when he was permitted to enter upon his father's lands.
