Research Notes:
1st Lord Borthwick, of Barony cr 1452 [Ref: CP II p221]
1st Lord Borthwick [Ref: CP II p477]
son and heir of Sir William BORTHWICK, of Borthwick Castle [Ref: CP II p221]
The name William is used for the eldest son in successive generations of the
family during this period and there has always been difficulty in
distinguishing a specific William from his father or son. The SP account at II
95-96 is very confused. [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87(24)]
The accounts of the first 4 Lords are very obscure, and that given in Scots
Peerage points to there not being very much advance in precision possible
overthe one appearing in the 1st edition of CP. It is conceivable that the
first 2 Lords in the text may be in fact the same man, but in that case this
man must have lived to a great age. [Ref: CP II p221(d)]
1420: Captain of Edinburgh Castle [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v13-95]
No instrument creating the dignity is extant, but it appears from the
evidence before the House of Lords in 1870 that this Peerage was not existing
in 1450, but was so in 1455. In the protest of 1763 and elsewhere, the date
ofthe Peerage is erroneously given as 1424, being attributed to Sir William
Borthwick, the founder of Borthwick Castle [Ref: CP II p221(c)]
Oct 1430: knighted, at the baptism of the infant James II [Ref: ODNB 54135
Borthwick]
Jun 1452: created Lord Borthwick [Ref: ODNB 54135 Borthwick]
although he may have married twice, no spouse's name is known. The
peerage petition of 1984-6 was inaccurate in stating his second wife was
