The name William is used for the eldest son in successive generations of the family during this period and there has always been difficulty in distinguishing a specific William from his father or son. The SP account at II 95-96 is very confused. [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87(24)]

The accounts of the first 4 Lords are very obscure, and that given in Scots Peerage points to there not being very much advance in precision possible overthe one appearing in the 1st edition of CP. It is conceivable that the first 2 Lords in the text may be in fact the same man, but in that case this man must have lived to a great age. [Ref: CP II p221(d)]

1 May 1411: a dispensation was issued for the marriage of William Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair, but there is no clue as to which William Borthwick is meant [Ref: SP II p95 (with corr in IX p39)]

There are two possibilities, that Sir William Borthwick (d.c1414) was the son of a daughter of Sir William Sinclair (d.1330), or was the husband of an otherwise unknown granddaughter of Sinclair [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 12/3/2005-111110]

Jun 1425: appointed ambassador from Scotland to Rome [Ref: ODNB 54135 Borthwick]

1430: received a royal license to erect a castle at the Mote of Lockerwort [Ref: ODNB 54135 Borthwick, Thompson CharlesII v13-96]

Borthwick Castle was built and fortrified by him (from whom it received its name), under warrant from James I, dated 2 Jun 1430, on lands in the moat of Lochorwant, formerly belonging to the family of Hay. [Ref: CP II p221(a)]
