Research Notes:
886-912: Eastern Emperor [Ref: Watney WALLOP #355, Weis AR7 #141A]
Cyril Mango, "Eudocia Ingerina, the Normans and the Macedonian Dynasty",
Zbornik Radova byzantinoskog instituta 14/15:17-27 (1973) writes on p27:
"as for the paternity of Leo VI, we shall never, of course, know the
truth beyond any reasonable doubt; but the evidence as we have it gives
stronger support to Michael's claim than it does to Basil's." [Ref: Brook
ByzantineAnc p38#11, Mango Byzantium XV-27]
one can no doubt never know the trust of his birth, so the question
appears to embroil us today [Ref: Settipani LGA p10]
Leo VI's mother was Eudocia Ingerina. His father was either her lover Michael
III or her husband Basil I.
If Leo VI was the son of Michael III then a very plausible connection to the
Armenian noble family of Mamikonian exists through Michael's mother the
empress Theodora, daughter of the turmarch Marinos, probably brother of Manuel
Mamikonian.
If Leo VI was the son of Basil I then Armenian connections are much murkier,
though they undoubtedly exist. [Ref: Chris Bennett SGM 12/18/1995]
The Logothete states explicitely that Leo was Michael's son; he implies
the same of Stephen, and says that only Alexander was a legitimate son of
Basil. These allegations were accepted by historians up to and including
Vogt's Basile I (1908). Bury, writing in 1912, rightly pointed out that
it is impossible to accept as proven such statements about paternity.
Today [1973] all historians take it for a fact that on the contrart, Leo
was Basil's son. This revirement of historians is due to an article by Adontz
(1933) who based himself on the then recently published funeral oration by Leo
VI -- it is a document of the most patent insincerity, and does not prove
anything at all; Adontz, an Armenien, was bent on showing that the Macedonian
dynasty was of Armenian origin [Ref: Mango Byzantium XV-23]
