Research Notes:
Came to East Finley Township in 1777, age 24 [Ref: Bell BYERS-87 p1]
Took Oath of allegiance to the State of Virginia in October 1777. The oath
was administered by a neighbor, Thomas Waller, and was required of all white
males age 16 and over. [Ref: Bell BYERS-87 p2]
Listed as a private in militia company of Captain James Buchanan, a neighbor,
in 1778. [Ref: Bell BYERS-87 p13, Bell BYERS-87 p2]
lived in East Finley Township until his death except for (1) 1781-82 when he
lived in Fayette County where he married Agnes Lawson (daughter of Thomas)
about 1781, and served there in the militia, and (2) 1782-83 when he and his
brothers, James and Thomas, are listed in the 1783 tax list of Strabane
Township, Washington Co, a few miles to the northeast. [Ref: Bell BYERS-87 p1]
Listed in the company of Captain John Allen of Franklin Township, (then)

the West Alexander (formerly Three Ridges) Presbyterian Church. [Ref: Bell

This Indenture made the thirtieth day of May in the year of our Lord One
thousand seven hundred and ninety six between William Smith Esq, William
Sleator and James Stevenson Esq trustees of the Associate Congregation of
Three Ridges in the County of Washington and State of Pennsylvania of the one
part and James Armstrong, William Gaston, William Boner, Samuel Byers, and
John White, Trustees of the Congregation of the Presbyterian under the
Pastoral Care of the Rev. M John Brice member of the Ohio Presbytery known
also by the name of Three Ridges Congregation in the County and State
aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that Whereas a Certain Robert Humphrey
and Martha his wife by their deed of Conveyance dated the eleventh day of June
in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five did convey
transfer and make owner in common form with William Smith Esq and William
Stealer aforesaid two of the above named Trustees of the Associate
Congregation as aforesaid and their Successors a certain piece of land lying
and being in the County of Washington aforesaid and in the Township of Donigal
and Findly on the great road from Washington to Wherein known by the name of
Mr Breers Meeting House of Three Ridge Congregation described as follows (to
wit), Beginning at a Gum Tree standing at the northwest corner of the
aforesaid Meeting house thence North eighty five degrees east twenty perches
to a post thence west twenty perches to a post thence south eighty five
degrees west twenty perches to a post thence north five degrees east to the
place of beginning, is a parcel or tract of land granted to the said Humphrey
by Patent bearing date at Philadelphia about the last of February one thousand
seven hundred and eighty six and recorded in Patent Book No 6 page 56. Now
this Indenture further witnesseth that whereas the herebefore mentioned
Presbyterian Congregation aforesaid had heretofore the said described piece of
land claimed as a Seat for a House of Public Worship and whereas a dispute
long subsisted between the two said Congregations respecting to whom the real
title belonged, and Whereas the parties in order to accommodate and settle
their said dispute by their respective trustees submitted the same to the
Arbitration and final Determination of John Hoge Isaac Lect George Granghead
and James Erdgar. Now this Indenture still further witnesseth that in
consideration of the sum of Forty Dollars to the said William Smith Esq James
Stevenson and William Slator in hand paid or secured to be paid before the
deed here is confirmed to the
made under the hands and seals of
the Arbitrators aforesaid of October 1795 and for other good
Consideration said award the said William Smith William Sleator
and James Stevenson Trustees of the Associate Congregation aforesaid have
granted bargained and sold aliened released and confirmed and by these
presents do bargain and sell alien release and confirm to the said James
Armstrong William Bonner Samuel Byers and John White Trustees of the
Presbyterian Congregation aforesaid and their successors the aforesaid piece
of land as before described with the building or buildings thereon erected and
appurtenances thereunto belonging, the Right Title Claim Interest and Demand
whatsoever to them or under them in any manner lawfully laying claim to same
forever the said William Smith William Slator and James Stevenson or either of
them and of the Associated Congregation aforesaid, To Have and To Hold the
land and premises aforesaid with the appurtenances to said James Armstrong
William Gaston William Boner Samuel Byers and John White and their successors
in office forever, To the only proper use and behoof of the said Presbyterian
Congregation, And the said William Smith William Slator and James Stevenson
doth covenant for themselves and for their successors in office as well as for
their Constituents of the Associate Congregation the aforesaid piece of land
and buildings with the appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said James
Armstrong William Gasten William Bonner Samuel Byers and John White and their
Successors in office against them or any person or persons lawfully laying
claim to the same and their Congregation known and called by the name of the
Associate Congregation aforesaid, will Warrant and Defend. In Testimony
whereof the parties have hereunto Interchangeably set their hands and affixed
their seals the day and year first above written. William Smith, William

This Indenture made this thirteenth day of May one thousand eight hundred
and eleven by and between Samuel Byers and Agnes Byers his wife of the one
part and Thomas Byers of the other part all of the County of Washington and
State of Pennsylvania, Witnesseth that the said Samuel Byers and Agness Byers
his wife as aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of seventy seven
dollars current money to them in hand paid by the said Thomas Byers the
receipt and payment whereof is hereby acknowledged hath this day sold aliened
and confirmed and by these presents do sell alien and confirm to the said
Thomas Byers his heirs executors administrators or assigns forever one certain
tract of land lying and being in the County of Washington and State of
Pennsylvania on waters of Buffalo Creek and bounded as follows, beginning at a
white oak on north side of the branch of said Buffalo Creek, thence south 46
west 14:7 to a maple, thence south 62 west 21 perches to a post on said Thomas
Byers line thence with said line south 60 west 98 perches to a dogwood north
47 east 29 perches to a white oak thence north 50 west 26 perches to a white
oak thence north 61 west 16 perches to white oak thence north 50 west 48 pole
to the beginning containing nineteen acres and one fourth To have and To Hold
the aforesaid tract of land with all the appurtenances to him the said Thomas
Byers his heirs and assigns forever and the said Samuel Byers and Agnes Byers
his wife doth hereby agree to warrant and defend the rights and title of the
said land from themselves and their heirs and from any person or persons
whatsoever claiming by from or under them the said Samuel Byers and Agness
Byers his wife and from all manner of persons forever that may hereafter claim
the said tract of land unto the said Thomas Byers his heirs executors
administrators and assigns forever. In Testimony whereof the said Samuel
Byers and Agness Byers have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals
the day and year above written. N.B. the above described lot of ground is a
part of a tract of land granted to the said Samuel Byers by patent dated the
twenty second day of March one thousand eight hundred and eleven this note

Washington County. Be it remembered that on the 13th day of May 1811 before
me the subscriber one of the Justices of the peace for said County came the
within named Samuel Byers and Agness his wife and acknowledged the within
indenture to be their act and deed and desired the same should be recorded as
such; the said Agness being first examined by me separate and apart from her
said husband and the contents of the said Indenture made known to her did
acknowledge that she executed the same voluntarily and of her own free will
and accord without any force threats or compulsion from any person whatsoever.
