date of birth determined by affidavit of Layden, June 25 1609, in which he,
his wife Mary and son Jonathan declare their ages 42, 40, and 16 years. [Ref:

matriculated in Cambridge, Dec 3 1580. An assistant of William Davison, Sec.
of State to Queen Elizabeth, and with him to the Netherlands Aug 1585, serving

appointed position of Postmaster before Apr 1594 [Ref: Sav-age BREWSTER

appointed to the office of "Post", which he held until Sep 30 1607. His
father was "Post" and is said his grandfather held the office. The office of
Post was a court appointment; the mails were only accessible to those
connected with the court until 1644. [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS BREWSTER-p111]
attempting to move to Holland 1607, the Pilgrims were imprisoned in Boston,
Lincolnshire, through treachery of the master of the ship. "He was ye cheefe
of those taken and suffered ye greatest loss; and of ye seuen that were kept
longest." He lost most of his possessions, including valuable books. He was
freed with great difficulty and went to Leyden, Holland, where he suffered
hardships and spent most of his means providing for his "many children." The
twelve years in Holland, he taught and ran a printing press with help of
friends. The Church of Leyden resolved to emigrate to Virginia. [Ref:
