Gilbert de Warenne was described as 'patruus' of Walter Giffard of Weare. Unless 'patruus', paternal uncle, is being used for 'avunculus', maternal uncle, Gilbert must have been the product of another marriage of Avice de Clare, relict of Ralph de Fougeres [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p776]

subsequent confirmation of the above charter suggest Gilbert was in fact a brother of Robert [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p996]
