May 1607: the Plymouth Company sent out two ships under the command of Capt Popham and Raleigh Gilbert with on ehundred men to commence the first permanent English settlement in New England. The group landed in August 1607 at Sabino Head near the mouth of the Kennebec River in what is now the modern state of Maine. They built a store house, fortified it, and gave it the name of Fort St George [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v5p59]
