marriage to Guildford Dudley was part of a plot for altering the succession from the Tudors to the Dudleys upon the decease of King Edward VI. Following the death of Edward VI on 6 Jul 1553, Lady Jane was proclaimed Queen of England three days later by the council. On 9 Jul however, Princess Mary sister of the late king wrote to the council declaring herself the king's lawful successor. On 11 Jul twenty one councillors, headed by Duke of Northumberland, replied that Lady Jane was queen of England. On 12 Jul Lord treasurer Winchester surrendered the crown jewels to the new queen Jane. On 19 Jul Mary was proclaimed queen throughout the country. Jane's father, Duke of Suffolk, himself proclaimed Mary at the gates of the Tower, and told his daughter that she was a prisoner and that her reign was over. She was arraigned at the Guildhall for high treason 14 Nov, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to death. She and her husband were both executed on Tower Hill 12 Feb 1553/4.
