Obituary appeared in Salina Journal:
Mourn For Chief
Fred Brodbeck's Life Ebbed Out Saturday
Injured In Call to Duty
Amputation of his leg failed to save his life as was hoped.
The Salina fire station is draped in mourning. Crepe hangs upon either side
of the entrance and while the big red automobile truck still responds to fire
alarms and the firemen answers the call to duty, the truck in draped in
mourning, a silent testimony to the service of the former leader. Fire Chief
Brodbeck will respond to no more alarms to save the lives and property of the
citizens of Salina.
Fire Chief Brodbeck died at 5:00 o'clock Saturday evening from the results
of the accident last Monday when the car in which he was rushing to a fire was
driven to destruction in fruitless effort to avoid striking a buggy, which had
driven in the road. An attempt was made to save his life Saturday by the
amputation of his leg which was crushed in the accident but the chief failed
to rally after the operation and remained very weak until his death a few
hours later. His highly nervous temperament and weak bodily condition probably
contributed also to the effects of the accident.
Today the body is at home on East Ash street but tomorrow morning at 10:00
o'clock it will be removed to the council chambers in city hall where it will
lie in state until 2:30 o'clock the funeral services will be conducted in the
council chambers by the Right Reverend Bishop Sheldon M. Griswold of the
Episcopal Church. The internment in Gypsum Hill Cemetery will follow.
The following list of ex-councilmen, many who were members at the time Chief
Brodbeck was made head of the Salina Fire Department, have been selected to
act as voluntary pallbearers: T. B. Valette, T.P. Quinn, H.C. Elliott, Frank
Wyatt, C.A. Hame, and D.W. Hills. The active pallbearers will be selected from
the volunteer firemen of the city and the regular firemen with the big truck
will accompany the procession to the cemetery as far as it is thought best for
them to leave the station in case of fire alarms.
Fred Brodbeck was born in Rome, Illinois May 4, 1873 but spent the larger
part of his younger days at Peoria where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Brodbeck and other relatives still reside. Twenty-one years ago, at the age of
18 he first entered on to the work as a fireman and continued so until his
death. Twelve years of his service was spent at Peoria, and two years at
Chicago as a regular fireman and for two years he was Chief of the department
at Marseilles, Illinois. In April 19099 he came to Salina where he has since
had charge of the fire department and has succeeded in building it up to such
a point that it was a model for the entire state.
Chief Brodbeck was married at Peoria, Illinois seventeen years ago, and
besides his wife, he leaves three small daughters, Mercedes, Mildred, and
Mary. Besides his parents, he leaves four brothers in Peoria, while three
brothers live elsewhere. His twin brother, Edward Brodbeck of Peoria was not
able to be here for the funeral, but H.P. Brodbeck another brother is here as
well as Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Tracy of Averyville, Illinois. Mrs Tracy is Mrs
Brodbeck's sister, her husband is mayor of Averyville. Mrs Leonard Sheppler of
Peoria and Mrs. S.H. Paxton of Grand Rapids, Michigan, both sisters of Mrs.
Brodbeck were not able here on account of sickness.
Fire chief Brodbeck was a friend of practically every man in Salina who had
the honor of his acquaintance. His devotion to duty and his work for the best
interests of the city and his protection of lives and property of the citizens
had won him the respect of all and it is remembered that he lost his life
while answering a call of duty. His sense of duty and a short time after the
accident he said to a friend, "A fireman's duty is to protect the life and
property of other people. When I saw at the bridge that a collision was
inevitable, I told the driver to turn to the right. Had it not been for the
stone and gravel on the street we would have missed the railing that we
struck. [Ref: Ray Brodbeck 7/29/2008]
