Research Notes:
identity currently agreed to be Phthia of Epire. This point was the
object of many discussions due to the apparent contradictions in the
ancient sources. Late chroniclers (4th century, 6th centiry, and 12th
century) say that Philip V was son of Demetrios II and of Chryseis. Eusebe
(4th century) was more precise that Chryseis was one of the captives cpatured
by Demetrios at the time of the capture of Cyrene, and next spouse. Polybe
(contemporary) confirms that in 217 the spouse of Antigonos III was called
Chryseis. Plutarque state that Antigonos III had spouse the mother of
Philippos, his pupil. But Justin says that Demitrios II married Phthia,
daughter of Olympias of Epire, and then Antigonos III married the mother of
Philippos, son of Demetrios. Two athenien inscriptions name in 236/5 and
235/4 the king Demetrios, queen Phthia, and their children [Ref: Settipani LGA
p104]
descended from Eacides of Epire, kings of Chaonie in Illyrie, and Tyrants of
Syracuse of the Agathokles dynasty [Ref: Settipani LGA p106]
