Funeral Service Held Here Sunday for Frank A. Peabody Houlton Trust Co.
President.
Local Bank Head Dies At 82 In His Home After Long Illness; Took Active Part
In Community Affairs; Once Head of Chamber of Commerce
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two at the Unitarian church
for Frank A. Peabody, president of the Houlton Trust Company and former
chairman of the Maine State Highway Commission, who died at his home on Court
street Thursday after a long illness. He was 82 years of age.
Frank Allen Peabody was born April 16, 1867 at North Esk, N.B., the son of
John and Ann (Tweedie) Peabody. He came to Houlton as a young man and was a
prominent and active resident of this community until his death.
His first business enterprise in Houlton was with the Ingraham Clothing
Company, being a member of that firm for several years. In 1907 he founded
the F.A. Peabody Company, insurance firm, of which he was the active head
until his retirement a few years ago.
Early in life he took an active interest in the affairs of this town and
served for 15 years as a member of the Board of Seletmen, for 14 of which he
acted as chairman. He was a member of the board of directors of the Houlton
Water Company for many years and also served as president of that company. He
is past chairman of the part and cemetery committee.
He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and was commissioned a Captain
in the Maine National Guard in command of Company L, quartered at Houlton, a
rank he held for several years.
He took an active interest also in fraternal organizations in Houlton,
having served as Worshipful Master of Monument Lodge, F. and A. M. and as
Noble Grand of Rockabema Lodge of Odd Fellows. In the early twenties he
became one of the charter members of the Houlton Rotary Club serving as its
first president for two terms and maintained his keen interest in the club's
affairs until his health interfered. He was the author of a charge given to
new club members which could well serve as a model for other clubs and was
also instrumental in the organization of other Rotary Clubs in this area,
including those at Presque Isle and Woodstock.
He was a life long member of the Unitarian church here, serving it in many
capacities, including that of trustee for many years and also gave long and
loyal service to Ricker Classical Institute as a member of the Board of
Trustees.
Me Peabody was one of the organizers of the Houlton Country Club, of which
he served as president, was a former president of the Houlton Chamber of
Commerce and also of the Meduxnekeag Club of Houlton. His prominence in his
chosen field of work brought him also the honor of being president of the
Maine Association of Insurance Agents.
A life long Democrat, he was active and interested in the affiard of his
party throughout the state and served Maine in two high offices. He was a
member of the Executive Council under Gov Plaisted and later was named to the
Maine State Highway Commission, of which he was a member for 15 years, acting
as chairman for ten years of that period.
He became president of the Houlton Trust Company in 1939 and was acting in
that capacity at the time of his death. Prior to his election as head of the
bank he served for more than 20 years as a director.
He was married June 23, 1897, to the former Fannie Pearce of Houlton, who
survives. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1947.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary of Houlton, a son, George, of Bangor,
by three brothers, James S and Maurice H both of Houlton and Robert of Carys
Mills, by two sisters, Ann of Portland and Mrs. Myrtle Crandlemire of Houlton
and by three grandchildren.
The services were under the direction of Donald Dunn and the officiating
clergyman was Rev. Alfred J. Wilson, acting pastor of the Unitarian Church.
Members of Rockahema Lodge of Odd Fellows and of the Houlton Rotary Club
attended in a body. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. [Ref: Mary
