1902: joined the Fitchburg Fire Department as a permanent man [Ref: Kingsbury MARSHALL p71]

Obituary appeared in Fitchburg Sentinel, 3 Jul 1961: Henry N Marshall, Ex-Firefighter, dies Henry N Marshall, 87, a native of this city and a retired member of the Fitchburg Fire department died early this morning in the home of his grand-daughter, Miss Georgianna Marshall, 459 Forest Hills Rd Springfield. Born in this city Dec 9, 1873, Mr. marshall resided here most of his life, moving to Westminster after his retirement. He had resided in Springfield for the past four years. He became a call-private on Hose 1, July 17, 1901, when horses were used by the department. He became a permanent spare driver June 23, 1905 and permanent driver of Hose 1, April 20, 1915. He was advanced to acting Lieutenant of Hook and Ladder No1 Feb 2, 1920, and permanent private of Hose 1, July 12, 1920. He was transferred to Hook and Ladder No 1, Sep 7, 1922, and Hose 3, Nov 8, 1934 and retired from the department Jan 2, 1944. Besides his wife, Phebe B. (Withington) Marshall, he is survived by a son Lloyd K Marshall of Geneseo, NY, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be in Sawyer Funeral Home Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are tomorrow night from 7 to 8:30.
