Research Notes:
Esther Clark Wright, Planters and Pioneers Nova Scotia 1749 to 1775,
(Hantsport, Nova Scotia, 1978), p.185, states William was born at Billerica,
Massachusetts 28 Jul 1710, son of John and Eunice (Rogers) Marshall, and died
at Granville, Nova Scotia 31 March 1797. The birth date appears in the
published vital records of Billerica. It seems more likely that William is
related to the other contemporary Marshalls in Ipswich, perhaps a brother to
Ezekiel Marshall, whose daughter married Robert Nason. [Ref: Doug Chase
2/28/2000]
vital records indicate that William of Billerica and William of
Ipswich/Walpole are separate individuals [Ref: Doug Chase 2/28/2000]
probably resided at Ipswich until 1749, when the Selectmen of Walpole warned
out of "ye town William Marshall and his wife and all of his children" Citing
Isaac Newton Lewis, A History of Walpole, 1905, p94. [Ref: Doug Chase
2/28/2000]
Mass Archives v.94b p334 notes that William (as of October 1756) was 38 years
old, a resident of Walpole, but a native of Ipswich, serving as a "hired" (as
opposed to impressed or volunteered) soldier in Captain William Bacon's
Company, Colonel Richard Gridley's Regiment, apparently in an expedition to
Fort Edward. V94a p95 and p115 credit him with service in the Crown Point
Expedition, 5/3/55-8/27/55, and 5/3/56-(no end date given) [Ref: Stan Johnson
5/31/1999]
Willard De Lue, The Story of Walpole 1724-1924 (Norwood, 1925), p.120, cites
Mass Archives 94:64, in which he gave his age as 42 in 1756 when he enlisted
for service. William Marshall, age 42, weaver, was one of sixteen Walpole men
who enlisted in the Company commanded by Captain William Bacon of Dedham for
action in the French and Indian War. The company mustered at Dedham on 3 May
1756, and on 8 May, marched to Fort William Henry on Lake George, New York. A
muster roll of bacon's company on 11 October included William Marshall amone
those reported sick. [Ref: Doug Chase 2/28/2000]
appears on a return, dated 9 April 1759, of men enlisted or impressed fror His
Majesty's service in Colonel Francis Brinley's Regiment for the invasion of
Canada, aged 41, resident of Walpole. Enlisted 29 Mar 1759. Reported served
on a former expedition three times at Lake George, born at Ipswich. Remarks
made by Captain Joshua Clap. On this same report appears the name of Anthony
marshall, aged 20, resident of Walpole, father or master, William Marshall.
Boston Evening Transcript, 1 Apr 1914, citing Massachustetts Archives 97:103.
[Ref: Doug Chase 2/28/2000]
names of William Marshall and John Marshall are included in the pay roll of
Captain Timothy Mann's Company which responded to the alarm of 17 July 1780 in
Rhode Island. At Walpole town meeting of 10 Feb 1783, it was voted "to pay to
Abner Daggett for Rum & Sugar for William Marshall when Sick, 3s 9p". A
similar report is found in the Story of Walpole, and both sources refer to
William as being "poor." [Ref: Doug Chase 2/28/2000]
