Research Notes:
From the Old Norfolk county records, it appears that she once indulged in a
frolic which highly offended the stern Puritans: "Att ye Covnty Court held
att Hampton Octobr ye 9th: 1677. Dorithie Hoyt beeing called in Court to
answere her prsentment for putting on mans apparrell made default: being
before warrant went out remoued out of ye Covnty. But her father who was
ordered to bring her appeared in Court & owned ye fact committed by his
daughter: hee wth others manifesting ye great appearance of ye sd Dorethies
repentance vpon we ye sd John Hoyt her father desiering to fall vnder ye
poenall part of ye sentence of Court for ye fact comitted. The sd Dorethie is
adjudged by sd Court to bee apprhended as soone as shee comes into ye Covnty &
be layd hold on & bee severly whipt vnless yt her father forthwith on her
beehalfe pay a fine of forty shillings in corne or money to ye Treasurer of ye
Covnty & costs." In this session of Court, "John Hoyt Jvnr" (her brother) was
on the "Jurie of Tryalls" and "John Hoyt Senr" (her father) and William Barnes
were members of the "Grand jurie." Whether the fine was paid is not known.

1677: for her excapade of dressing up in men's clothes, the Puritan
magistrates ordered her to be severly whipped. Her father, who doubtless
connived her departure and escape, paid a fine of forty shillings in her
behalf [Ref: Davis HARMON p58, Davis HARMON p58]
