Research Notes:
after coming to this country, he later moved to the western part of Pennsylvania and later to his home in Ohio, where he died about 1863. He was not an ordained minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, according to the New York City records of that church. He would be described as a "local preacher" [Ref: SawhillDB SAWHILL p15]

letter from a correspondent, 1917:
My first knowledge of this family, probably was about 1850, when we were visited by Uncle John Neely, who was then an old man, who lived in Morgan County, Ohio, about 40 miles distant, south of Zanesville. He was then the most unique character I have ever seen, alight, but with the Napoleonic sign, an enormous nose. He was a M.E. preacher and preached at our school house, at our house, and whenever asked to preach. The strange part was that he used no book, reciting the chapter and humn from memory. He gave as an explanation that some years before, his eyesight had failed, whereupon his memory had been miraculously quickened and when a chapter or a hymn had been read to him, it became stamped on his memory, and in this way he could repeat a large part of the Bible and Hymn Book.
In the early part of the last century, he then having a family, came from Ireland to look over this country, and locate a place for himself and friends, which he found near Philadelphia. He then returned and landed at Liverpool just at the time when John Wesley was preaching to the dock-hands and longshoremen on the wharfs there. John listened, was converted and became a preacher and always rejoiced that he was a 'John Wesley convert'. [Ref: SawhillDB SAWHILL p14]
