1222/54: Ks v Nikaia [Ref: ES I.1 #15]

The account of the ancestry of John III given in his fifteenth century Vita is demonstrably incorrect. The emperor's father (a man of humble origin, according to the chronicler Niketas Choniates) was probably Basileios Batatzes, domestikos of the Anatolian theme. [Ref: Brook ByzantineAnc p10]
