domestikos of the Anatolian theme c1189 [Ref: Brook ByzantineAnc p10]
The Batatzai (Vatatzai) appear to hgave been established to Thrace when
first mentions of the family occur in the late tenth century. The family
was a distinguished one whose members occupied many high positions of
state and intermarried with the greatest aristocratic houses. It is
likely, however, that the branch which provided Byzantium with three
(exiled) emperors was a comparatively junior one. Emperor John III did
not boast of his Batatzes descent; he and his son and grandson (Theodor
II, 1254-58, and John IV, 1258-61, emperors of Nicaea) did not use the
patronymic. The Batatzai appear to have died out in the male line in the
thirteenth century, although the collateral line of the Diplobatatzao
survived until the sixteenth century [Ref: Brook ByzantineAnc p10]
