Sources with Inaccurate marriage information
- names:
- Olivier II de Clisson & Isabelle de Craon [Ref: ES III.4 #720],
- note:
- ES III#720, Anselme, Casanovas, and DBF all give the husband of Isabelle
de Craon as Oliver II; however Henneman at 226 shows her husband was actually
Guillaume III, son and heir of Oliver II [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v26-84(286)]
Research Notes:
Sire of Clisson [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v26-84]
by 22 Jul 1298: succeeded his father as a minor [Ref: Thompson CharlesII
v26-84]
ES III.4 #720 (Craon), Anselme 6:202, Casanovas Henry IV 137, and DBF 9:14 all
give the husband of Isabelle de Craon as Oliver II, Sire of Clisson. However,
Henneman, Oliver de Clisson, at 226, presents evidence to show that her
husband was actually Guillaume III, son and heir of Oliver II. Oliver II, who
succeeded to his ancestral lands in 1262, wouldhave been born by 1240.
Isabelle de Craon, as the third child of her parent's marriage, which was
contracted in 1277, would have been born about 1282. Therefore, she would have
been over forty years younger than Oliver II, and barely of childbearing age
when he died between 1293 and 1298. Guillaume III had succeeded his father by
1298 while still a minor, and died by 1307. It is known that Isabelle de Craon
married a Clisson, by whom she was mother of Oliver III, Sire of Clisson.
Henneman notes that Guillame was clearly his father's heir and states that it
was "not likely that a daughter of the Craon family would have married a
cadet" [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v26-84(286)]
