abt 1235: first appears in records, which connect him to Gilbert Marshal, Earl of Pembroke [Ref: Reed StMAUR p398]

Gilbert Marshal covenanted to aid him in wresting the manor of Woundy (Undy) from the Welsh overlord Morgan ap Howel [Ref: Reed StMAUR p398]

acquired the estates of Woundy, Penhow, etc, co Monmouth, and fixed his residence at Penhow [Ref: Burke Peerage p1869]

quite likely that he built a 'castle' at Penhow, which became the base of his family [Ref: Reed StMAUR p405]

1234-44: witnessed four charters before he was knighted [Ref: Reed StMAUR p401]

1244-5: knighted [Ref: Reed StMAUR p402]

1245-67: as Sir William de St Maur, witnessed five more charters [Ref: Reed StMAUR p403]

almost stunning that three sources, Annals of the Seymours, The Seymour Family: History and Romance, and Seymour Dawn state that he married Sybil Marshall, third daughter and coheir of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke [Ref: Reed StMAUR p405]
