Sir John de Mowbray of Kirklington, Judge of the Common Pleas 1359-1373,
certainly belonged to a cadet branch of the baronial house whose arms,
gules a lion rampant silver, he bore, differenced by a bordure engrailed
gorbony gold and sable, which appear on the tomb of his son William in
Gray Friars, York [Ref: Moriarty Kirklington p170]
unsolved question of parentage-- Roger de Mowbray, head of the baronial
house of the name, had a younger son Robert who occurs 1154-1185 and Neel
de Mowbray, son and heir of Roger (died in 1191 at Acre) had William his
heir, and Philip and Robert. Any of these three (Robert son of Roger,
Philip or Robert sons of Neel) may have been the progenitor of William of
Skutherskelf, Tanton and Easby [Ref: Moriarty Kirklington p174]
