Research Notes:
Goldie Mae Peabody Brownyard, 98, passed away on July 4, 2008 in Indianapolis,
Indiana where she moved in 1999 to reside with her son and daughter-in-law.
Born to Charles Griffin Peabody and Carrie Blanch (Beach) Peabody on December
17, 1909, she was educated at the University of Michigan and Wayne State
University and had a long career as an elementary school principal in Royal
Oak, Michigan. Her career was distinguished by pioneering of elementary
outdoor education and participating in the development of a state-wide
elementary science curriculum. Goldie served as the President of Michigan
Elementary Principals Association and held other leadership positions prior to
her retirement. Most recently she resided at Sunrise at Fall Creek, where she
received loving care.
Her marriage (1931-1946) to Edwin K. Wheeler, former Executive Editor of the
Detroit News, ended in divorce. In 1968 she remarried Theordore L. Brownyard,
PhD and became a resident of Maryland where she was active in the Daughters of
the American Revolution, The Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Mayflower
Society and the Descendants of Charlemagne. She was a past Regent of the
Erasmus Perry Chapter of the D.A.R. Not coincidentally, her husband exercised
his interest in family history to become a certified genealogist upon his
retirement as a civilian physicist for the Navy. Goldie demonstrated her
particular skills by combining history and teaching as a docent at the D.A.R
National Museum, in Washington, D.C., becoming the National Chair and staying
active well into her 80's. The Brownyards enjoyed travel and visited Europe,
Russia, China and Great Britain, as well as many of the states, often in
pursuit of genealogic information.
Dr. Brownyard predeceased Goldie as did her two brothers, Ferris Charles
Peabody and Arthur L. Peabody.
Mrs. Brownyard leaves a son, Kirk (Corinne) Wheeler, three grandchildren,
Robert (Kristan), Mathew (Christina) and Megan, as well as two great
grandchildren, Leyden and Drake. Her nieces, Janice and Virginia and nephews,
Bruce and Robert also survive.
Arrangements entrusted to Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, Indianapolis, IN.
