Marriage settlement.Reference: CD/385
Creation dates: 3 Jul 1387
Scope and Content
Sir Ralph de Crumwelle the younger and Sir Thomas Gray, lord of Hetton
[Yorks., W.R.] and Sir Thomas Doumfrayville. On the marriage of Sir Ralph and
Lady Joan Heron, sister of Sir Thomas Gray, which is to take place at
Michaelmas next, Gray, Doumfrayville, John de Dranffeld and Hugh de Mitford
bound to Sir Ralph and Sir William fitzWilliam in a certain sum of money.
Witnesses: Sir Darcy, Sir William fitzWilliam. Sir John de Birton, Sir Richard
Parson of Anston [Yorks., W.R.], William de Leke, and Hugh de Mitford. Given
at Temple Hurst
...a rich source for a number of reasons as it identifies Joan as (1) a sister
of Thomas Grey of Heton d.1400, (2) widow of Sir John Heron of Crawley, (3)
the wife of Sir Ralph Cromwell d.1417, and (4) highlights the relationships
between the families named in the marriage settlement.
Thomas Grey and Margaret Presfen are known to have had a daughter named
Joan (she actually seems to have been known as Jane), as seen in CP IV 62 note
(f) which says that in 1367 Thomas conveyed all his lands to himself and
Margaret, dau of William de Presfen, and their heirs, rem. to Joan de Coupland
for life and with successive remainders to John Gray, Thomas Gray, Jane,
Elizabeth, and Agnes children of the said Margaret. [Ref: Rosie Bevan SGM
