4 Jun 1814: first record in Ohio; bought two lots in Dayton for $100 from

William had other land transactions with Charles Smith in 1815 and 1816. On
July 27, 1815 William borrowed $5227.45 jointly with Duncan Lewis and Co and
secured the loan with his land. When Julia was only four years old William
was sued for nonpayment of the note and his land was sold by the Court on Nov.
15, 1819. Between 1819 and 1823 there were a series of suits against
William and his business partners for debts and damages. Charles Smith was
also sued in some of these cases. One suit names William as a "surviving
partner" of the firm Duncan, Lewis & Co. [Ref: Betty Pollack 9/7/2009]
1 Sep 1819: William's father, James, wrote in his will: "I bequeath and
devise to my son William the north east quarter of section nine town three
range six in the County of Montgomery and State of Ohio, there being two
hundred and thirty dollars to be paid to the land office which money said
William must pay." James also named "my sons Thomas and William sole
executors of my estate". William received an affidavit for this land on
August 31, 1824 after his father's death. [Ref: Betty Pollack 9/7/2009]
