Research Notes:
534-560: King of the West Saxons [Ref: Weis AR7 #1]
King #2 [Ref: Yorke AngloSaxonKings p134]
appears to have landed in Britain as a boy or young man, placing his birth in
the period 512-532 [Ref: Partridge Ina p94]
552: This year Cynric fought with the Britons on the spot that is called
Sarum, and put them to flight. [Ref: Weis AR7 #1]
556: This year Cynric and Ceawlin fought at Beranbury [Ref: Weis AR7 #1]
Anglo-Saxon Chronicles for year 855, giving the pedigree of Aethelwulf, gives
a different pedigree for Ine (King#12), by the inclusion of Creoda as the son
of Cerdic and father of Cynric; elsewhere in the Chronicles Cynric is Cerdic's
son. [Ref: Yorke AngloSaxonKings p142-3]
ancestry is problematic, large due to Creoda. Inserting Creoda between Cerdic
and Cynric causes Cerdic to die implausibly old. Accepting Yorks's hypothesis
that multiple pedigrees were conflated helps explain why the muddle exists,
but does not allow us to sort it out. Therefore, the exact relationship
between Caewlin, Cynric, Creoda, and Cerdic has not been established [Ref:
Partridge Ina p98]
As for the problem with Creoda, he seems to appear in the earlier genealogies,
and is omitted from the later ones given in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and it
appears that whoever rewrote the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle to expand the arrival
of Cerdic back to 495 also chose to omit Creoda from the genealogy. Thus,
assuming again that Cerdic and Cynric existed at all, the version in which
Cynric is son of Creoda and grandson of Cerdic seems more likely than the
alternative in which Cerdic is Cynric's father. You should be aware, however,
that the genealogy of nearly all early kings of Wessex (and not just Cerdic
and Cynric) is subject to numerous inconsistencies and uncertainties. For one
attempt to clean up the mess of early West Saxon genealogy (not necessarily
correct, but a good read nonetheless), see the article "Problems of Early West
Saxon History" by D. P. Kirby, in "English Historical Review" 80 (1965),
10-29. (The pre-Cerdic generations in the "official" West Saxon genealogy were
shown to be fabrications by K. Sisam in his article "Anglo-Saxon royal
genealogies" in "Proceedings of the British Academy" 39 (1953), 287-348.)
