Research Notes:
In Norse tradition she is represented as beautiful but deadly, and later
traditions ascribe a principal role in the Battle of Clontarf to her pique at
her husband King Brian. [Ref: Kelley Eve p13]
Her various relationships are a good example of the flexibility of the
marriage tie at this time. She is usually said to have married Brian in
1000, when the latter concluded a treaty with her son Sitric, probably giving
his daughter to Sitric in rexchange for Sitric's mother, thugh Brian certainly
had at least one other wife living at the time. Her second husband both
preceded and suceeded Brian as king of Ireland, so he was living during the
entire period as well. According to Norse tradition, she was promised as a
wife to two of the Viking leaders who ame from outside Ireland to fight at
Clontarf, although her first husband had died 33 years earlier and she was
certanly no longer young. [Ref: Kelley Eve p13]
