five children died within a few months of each other. Family fokelore tells that the family returned from Jessie Kate's funeral only to find Mary Elizabeth had died [Ref: Kaup LYLE p23]

Five of their children died of black diptheria within a few months of each other: Jessie Kate, Mary Elizabeth, Varna Venessa, Alexander Savage, and Wilson Miller Gilkey. It is said that a sister of Margaret's who had moved west had written her a letter. The sister's family came down with black diptheria. it is thought that handling that letter is what brought disaster to Margaret's family, as there were no cases around New Galilee.
