The Walla Walla Union Bulletin (No date on clippings, but presumably late May or early June, 1955) There is a picture, about 7" x 8" of three teachers; Miss Yates is standing.
LOWER LEFT -- Wa-Hi's math department has long been known as one of the finest in the state. Helping to establish that enviable reputation have been these three teachers, Mrs. Ruth Dunn, left, Miss Bess Kirk, who has been head of the department, and Miss Mary K. Yates. The cameraman found them at a "coffee break" during exam week. Mrs. Dunn, 821 Hobson Street, is a native Walla Wallan, graduate of Wa-Hi and Whitman College and preceded her teaching duties here with similar work in Sunnyside. She has two daughters, one in Spokane and one in California, with whom she will be able to spend more time now that teaching duties are over . . . Retirement for Miss Kirk,,, Shady Hill apartments, means one less resident for Walla Walla. She's moving to Seattle in two weeks to be near relatives. Born in Everett, Wash., she went through high school there before going to the University of Minnesota. Her teaching career, before she came to Wa-Hi 31 years ago, included experience in Toppenish, Clarkston, and Honolulu, T.H. She belongs to A.A.U.W. and used to be active in the B. and P.W. club . . . Miss Yates, who owns her own home at 320 Juniper, by virtue of her 34 years at Wa-Hi, has been "dean of the faculty." Born in Milton-Freewater,, she attended grade school there and in Pendleton,, finished high school at Wa-Hi, and was graduated from Washington State College [Now Washington State University] as a home economics major although most of her teaching has been in math. Her previous teaching jobs were in Asotin and Milton. A member of the First Presbyterian Church and the City Teachers Association, she also belongs to A.A.U.W. . . . . It's going to be "nice not to be on schedule." Immediate plans call for a visit on the coast and more time for her hobby -- photography, both in black and white and color.
