Research Notes:
Jan 26 1668/9: confessed to fornication with Lydia Maynard and gave bond of 20 pounds for his appearance to answer the charge, with Jacob Moore (his brother) and Henry Rice as sureties. [Ref: Thompson MAYNARD p54]

Oct 5 1669: petition by Elizabeth Moore, mother of Joseph, and Mary Maynard, mother of Lydia Maynard now Moore, seeking that the imposition of corporeal punishment for fornication on their children be relieved, and a fine imposed instead. The court minutes of the period are missing, so we do not know when the charge was first made, what exactly the penalty was, or whether the petition of the mothers was respected. This petition was actually signed (not merely by mark) by both women, indicating a certain level of education. John Maynard signed the bond and his will by mark only [Ref: Thompson MAYNARD p55]

repeatedly recorded as having married first Lydia Hayward, and even a Lydia Axtell. Hayward was a mis-reading for Maynard, and the mother of his wife Lydia was Mary widow of Thomas Axtell who married secondly as his second wife John Maynard of Sudbury. John Maynard in his will dated 4 Sep 1672 called his daughter Lydia "wife of Joseph Moores" [Ref: Ferris DAWES-GATES v1p447]

made will in 1718-19, before second marriage to Ruth ___ [Ref: Bolton MOORE v57p302, DeForest MOORE p323]

died Jan 2 1725-26, will was proved the same year, though there was no provision in it for his widow, Ruth. She finally consented to the will, because her sons Benjamin and John had promised to make satisfactory provision for her maintenance. [Ref: Bolton MOORE v57p302]
