Aug 3 1861: enlisted as a private in Co D, 21st Reg Mass Vol, til Sep 25 1862. Took part in Burnside's Expedition, and fought in the Battle of Roanoke Island. Discharged from Mt. Pleasant Hospital Sep 23 1862 [Ref: Kingsbury MARSHALL p43]
