Research Notes:
probably a sea captain, crossing the Atlantic many times before settling permanently in Massachusetts [Ref: McCracken COGAN p175]

does not appear as a legatee in father's will (1612), but neither did his older brother Richard, who surely did not die until 1620. For some unknown reason, father did not choose to leave anything to his two younger sons, perhaps on the presumption that their mother would care for them [Ref: McCracken COGAN p169]

1634: emigrated, to Dorchester [Ref: Anderson GreatMigrationII v2p591]

Jul 1 1634: at a meeting of the Massachusetts Bay Council, a complaint heard of Mr John Cogan and Mr Henry Coggen against John Tilley over money matters; disputants were referred to a board of arbitration [Ref: McCracken COGAN p175]

Dec 4 1638: his servant, William Andrews, who had struck him was sentenced to be whipped [Ref: McCracken COGAN p175]

Jun 4 1639: summoned to appear by a plaintif who did not himself appear [Ref: McCracken COGAN p176]

Feb 13 1639/40: sold to Manasses kempton the five years remaining of the term of his servant, James Glass [Ref: McCracken COGAN p176]

1643: living in Barnstable, MA; listed as able to bear arms [Ref: McCracken COGAN p176]

died in England, perhaps on a voyage without his family and intending to return to America [Ref: McCracken COGAN p176]
