Theoderic refers to him as "Senator"; not a soldier, devoting his time to Latin scholarship and poetry, and, apparently, the amassing of land in Tuscany. His lack of military ability apparently led to his assassination [Ref: Amory Ostrogoths p454]

twice negotiated with Justinian to give up first his lands in Tuscany (533/4) and later his throne in exchange for a comfortable living in Constantinople; backfired, and result was his murder in 536 and the installation of Witigis as king [Ref: Amory Ostrogoths p454]
