evidently the founder of the family fortunes [Ref: Moriarty Wingfield p291]

pedigrees state that he married Eleanor, daughter of Gilbert de Glanville, but it is far more probable that she was the daughter of Sir Richard de Brews, as stated by Garter Anstis [Ref: Moriarty Wingfield p291]

his will he made his wife Eleanor his executrix, and she, together with his brother, Sir Thomas de Wingfield, established, as provided by the will, a chantry at Wingfield for the souls of himself, Sir John, and of his father and mother, and of Sir Richard de Brews, and of John (Thomas?)
