1348: Founder Knight of the Order of the Garter [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc
v3p422]
Maskell (1883) states that Sir Eustace d'Auberchicourt was sometimes
designated by the first name of Sanche. If true, then Eustace would surely be
the same person as Sir Sanchet d'Auberchicourt who was a Founder Knight of the
Order of the Garter in 1348. Froissart however only mentions Sanche in
passing. Feuchere's account of the Auberchicourt family agrees that Eustace
and Sache were the same person. Beltz believed that Eustace and Sanche were
separate and distinct individuals. Saint John Hope states that Sanche died
about 1360, while Eustace is known to have died c1372. Grace Holmes refutes
Sanche's death date. Further, Beltz states that Eustace is described by
Froissart as the second son, and Eustace's elder brother was known to be
Nicholas d'Auberchicourt, Prevot of Valenciennes, Captain of Enghien, who was
still living in 1358. Feuchere assigns Eustace and Nicholas only one other
brother, Giles, who was bailiff of Busignies and Premont in 1350. Evidence is
slim. [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v3p422(19)]
