Research Notes:
graduated at the law school at Litchfield, Conn, and admitted to the Lancaster Co, Bar in 1813. He became a leading lawyer, and was an active Democratic politician. He was appointed Prothonotary of Lancaster Co in 1818, and became adjucant general of the state in 1824. In that year he made the address of welcome at Lancaster to Lafayette. He was elected a member of the Pennsylvania legislature from Lancaster Co in 1827. In 1832 he was appointed governor of the territory of Michigan, a position that he occupied at the time of his death. [Ref: Helm TODD p276]
