Research Notes:
entered the Revolutionary army as a lieutenant in the 2nd Pa. Battalion, Jan 5
1776, and became a captain in the 3rd Pa. Line, Oct 4 1776. He retired Jan 1
1781. He was a major of U.S. Levies, under General St. Clair, in 1791, and
headed a bayonet charge at St. Clair's defeat, in which he was severly
wounded. He was appointed a Major of Infantry, U.S.A., in 1792, and rose to
the rank of Colonel of the 2nd U.S.Inf, Apr 1 1902. Col Butler had three
sons: Richard, a judge; Col Robert, Gen. Jackson's chief of staff in the War
of 1812; and William E, also a soldier in Gen. Jackson's army. [Ref: Helm TODD
