While documentation is scanty, we know that the line of the later Kings of Asturias descend from a nephew of King Alfonso. This is almost universally accepted as being Alfonso I, with the descent running from Alfonso's brother Fruela, Vermudo I, Ramiro I, and Ordono I to Alfosno III. However, a recent review by Vajay presents a reasonable argument that the uncle may have been Alfonso II. This would mean that Vermudo I's father Fruela would be son of Fruela I, and grandson of Alfonso I. This alternative needs to be explored in detail before we overturn the more traditional derivation. Either way, the Alfonso I and III share a male line ancestor in Pedro, Duke of Cantabria. [Ref: Todd Farmerie SGM 9/18/1998]
