godson and namesake of David I King of Scotland [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1053, SP VI p524]

1141: helped David of Scotland escape from the rout of Winchester [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1053]

serving in King Stephen's army at the time of the defeat of the Empress Matilda before Winchester, and saved his godfather from being taken prisoner [Ref: SP VI p524]

shortly afterward, he appears at the Court of King David in Scotland [Ref: SP VI p524]

1144: witnessed the royal grant of Lesmahago to the monks of Kelso [Ref: SP VI p524]

witnessed numerous royal charters of Malcolm and William; in twelve of them he is styled Justicarius [Ref: SP VI p524]

held lands of Crailling and Smallholm in Roxburgshire [Ref: SP VI p524]

tenant of the honour of Huntingdon at Sawtry, he forfeited his land there when Simon de Senlis gained control of the honour [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1053]

1147: Simon gave Sawtry to his foundation; when Malcolm IV acquired the honour in 1157, he compensated David with the grant of the lordship of Bothwell [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1053]

1162: gave two oxgates in Smallholm to the Abbey of Dryburgh; afterwards it was augmented to a ploughgate with pasture for three hundred sheep [Ref: SP VI p525]

gave to Jedburgh Abbey a tenth of the mnill of Crailing, confirmed by William the Lion before 1170 [Ref: SP VI p525]
