his father attempted to use his wealth and influence with Henry II, whose cause he had supported before his accession, to have Henry promoted to the bishopric of Exeter in 1161, but the successful candidate was the archdeacon Bartholomew. To appease the family, the new bishop appointed Henry archdeacon in his stead [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p852]
