given the relative rarity of both his name and his patronymic he is to be associated with the great FitzGerold family which was prominent in the region by 1150. he was probably a brother of the Robert FitzGerold whose eight sons included Warin FitzGerold, chamberlain to Henry II [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p895]
