Research Notes:
Stenton dated the document in which Walter Croc and his wife Aanor granted
land at Hazelbury, Wiltshire, to Farleigh priory to c.1130, because it appears
to be the original of a grant confirmed before 1135 by Henry I. Stenton noted
that a Walter Croc figured prominently in the Pipe Roll of 1129/30. However, a
Walter Croc occurs 30 years later in the early Pipe Rolls of Henry II, and one
of the witnesses to the charter, William Bigod, occurs in the Cartae Baronum.
The document should perhaps be dated at least thirty years later, the
reference to the monk's repayment of a mortgage to Adeliza de Dunstanville
merely identifies the grant. [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p251]
