Research Notes:
The earliest family member easy to identify is Lope Sanchez, who gained the claim to Ayala through his wife. Prior to this time, the family had no surname and no identifiable land holdings, so it becomes much more difficult to definitively trace them. We know his father had the name Sancho (from the patronymic). Since a Count Sancho Lopez son of Lope Diaz and Aldonza is well documented, and within the right chronological ballpark, Salazar y Castro taps him as the probable father of Lope Sanchez (but he does acknowledge that it is not on the most solid ground).
