Research Notes:
it is not unlikely that Ralf, the dapifer of Abbey of St Edmund's prior to Maurice de Windwor, may have been his brother [Ref: Moriarty Hastings p38]

There appears to be some reasonable ground to suppose that the historic house of Hastings descended from the sieurs of Vernoix, who held Vernoix near Caen and were the hereditary Marshals of the Stable to the Norman Dukes, an office corresponding to the Staller of the English Kings. It is further likely that the great house of Marshal, Earls of Pembroke, derive from the same stock. [Ref: Moriarty Hastings p37]

It is reasonable to suppose that Robert de Venoix and William de Hastings were brothers, and that Robert succeeded to the Norman fief, while William, who remained in England, retained the name of Hastings [Ref: Moriarty Hastings p38]
