Research Notes:
Probably through a misreading in an early Macfarlane copy of a charter of Balnebuth to the Abbey of Newbattle, Douglas names the brother of Peter, and presumed ancestor of the noble family of Montrose, John, and counfounds him with the John, who obviously belongs to a later generation, and this has been followed by all subsequent Peerage writers [Ref: SP VI p199]

abt 1170: witness to a confirmation of a charter to the Monastery of Newbottle [Ref: Burke Peerage p1416]

1200: present at the Court of William the Lion at Alyth, when William Comyn resigned his claims to certain lands to the Church of Glasgow [Ref: Burke Peerage p1416]
