inherited Barony of Mulgrave from father [Ref: Sanders Baronies p66]

abt 1167: succeeded his father as a minor in the ward of the count of Aumale [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p985]

it was recorded in the Chronicle of Melsa, 104ff, that while the count's ward he seduced the count's sister and was forced to flee. The king ordered the destruction of his castle at Birdsall, but William was later restored to favor [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p985]
