Research Notes:
Probably one of the oldest of the family and was born in Ireland. While I am
placing him next younger to Jeremiah, he may have been older than either
Jeremiah or Samuel. We have only an incidental knowledge of him. [Ref: McCoy
STURGEON p128]
Thomas was the first of the Sturgeons to purchase land in Lancaster County,
PA, and the land records show that he bought more land than any of the others,
buying several tracts at early dates; although Jeremiah was also a large
purchaser, Thomas and Jeremiah were apparently the thrifty business men of the
family and Henry was not far behind. There is little evidence of Thomas after
the 1750 decade. He was one of the executors of his brother Samuel's will,
made in 1750. He purchased land in 1752. There was a Thomas Sturgeon who
purchased ~150 acres in 1766 and several later purchases were made by Thomas
Sturgeon - but there was a Thomas Sturgeon, son of Samual, who was born in
1731 and who might have made some of these purchases, and while I think there
were made by his uncle, it can not now be certainly determined. I think young
Thomas Stugeon stayed on his father's farm, and found all he could do to take
care of it and his fast increasing family, until he removed in 1793 to Mifflin
County. The tax list of 1750 for Paxtang Township has the names of Thomas,
Jeremiah, and Peter. And we continue to find Thomas' name on such tax rolls
as have not been destroyed until about 1783. He probably died about this
time. We have no knowledge of his family, if he had one. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON
