Research Notes:
married Lydia Lee, a widow with one son, Andrew. She evidently was very young when first married, for she outlived her husband at least eight years and must have been more than ninety at the time of her death. They were probably married in this county. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p91]

Jeremiah likely came to America with his father in 1730 and settled upon a farm in Donegal Township, Lancaster Co, now Paxton Township, Dauphin County, PA, where he lived until his death [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p91]

Apr 2 1750: mentioned in will of brother, Samuel, to receive a bay horse and saddle [Ref: LancasterCoPA Wills J-235]

Jeremiah seems to have been a prosperous farmer, as shown by his will, and lived to a ripe old age, dying at about 87 years of age. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church at Paxtang, which he had evidently helped to organize. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p91]

---------- text of will:
In the Name of God, Amen: The fifth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred ninety two, I, Jeremiah Sturgeon of Paxton Township in the county of Dauphin and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania being somewhat weak in body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my nature and that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make, ordain, declare and establish this my last will and testament as follows:
I recommend my soul to Almighty God who gave it, and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian manner at the discretion of my executors herinafter named. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give devise bequeath and dispose thereof in the following manner:
First, I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Lydia the one third part of all the household and kitchen furniture with my black mare her saddle and bridle, and one cow, her choice, the residue of the furniture to be divided at her discretion among my daughters Martha, Lydia, Mary and Sarah, and also the back room in the eastern end of the house and the use of the kitchen for cooking and with a sufficiency of firewood, the one half of the garden and pasture for her horse and cow during her remaining my widow. And also the one third part of the issues and profits of my real estate during her natural life in lieu of dower, and one third part of the monies arising from the sale of my personal estate.
I do order that the residue of my personal estate shall be sold by public sale and equally divided among all my children, viz: John, Robert, Samuel, Martha, Lydia, Mary and Sarah, share and share alike.
It is my will and I do order and direct that my real estate be sold at such time as my executors thinks proper and the net amount (after paying the under specified legacies) shall be divided into five equal shares - four thereof to be equally divided between my sons John, Robert, Samuel and my daughter Sarah, who is to receive her part out of the first payment of the land - and the remaining one fifth share to be divided into four equal shares between my daughters Martha, Lydia, and Mary and the surviving heirs of my daughter Elizabeth, deceased.
I do give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah a horse saddle bridle one cow her bed and bed clothes and furniture with other furniture at her mothers pleasure.
I do give and bequeath to Thomas Sturgeon my brother Samuels son the sum of sixteen pounds.
I do give and bequeath to my grandson Jeremiah Sturgeon the son of my son Robert the sum of twenty pounds to be paid at the time he becomes an ordained minister of the Gospel.
I do hereby constitute nominate and appoint my trusty and loving sons, Robert and Samuel, and my sons in law, George Crain and John McDonald to be whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament - and I do disallow and revoke all former wills and testaments by the me made, declaring this and none other to be my last will and testament, and I do impower my said executors to sell and convey my real estate and their deed shall be good in law.
In witness whereof I, Jeremiah Sturgeon have hereto set my hand and seal the day and year first within written. Jeremiah Sturgeon (Seal)
Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and declared by the said Jeremiah Sturgeon as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of John Wilson, Jno. Kean, John Finney
N.B. I give and bequeath to my beloved wifes son Andrew Lee twenty pounds to be paid him out of my real estate.
This after clause I have ordered and it is my will that it be annexed and inserted in this my last will and testament and that it should be as valued as any other clause in this my last will, in confirmation of which I have hereunto set my hand and seal. Jeremiah Sturgeon (Seal)
